Avoiding Wordiness

ALWAYS use the least possible number of words!

For example, you could delete the crossed-out words with no loss of meaning.

advance planning	passing phase		     follow after
close proximity	        past history		     penetrate into
end result		proposed plan		     sink down
fellow colleagues	retrospective review	     big in size
first priority		total annihilation	     few in number
new beginning		weather conditions	     round in shape 
original source	        merge together	

One word can often substitute for three or four.

after the completion of (after)		in advance of (before)
ahead of schedule (early)		in order to (to)	
at an early date (soon)			in situations in which (when)
by the name of (named)			in the vicinity of (near)		
caused injuries to (injured)		large numbers of (many)
communicated to (told)			situated on (on)
for the purpose of (for)		the patient in question (the patient)
during the time that (while)		were found to have (had)
